Top 10 Compostable Packaging Companies in India: Company Profiles

1. UKHI: Integrated Compostable Packaging, From EcoGran Resin to Finished Bags

UKHI is a compostable packaging company in India based in Faridabad, Haryana, and it does something most compostable packaging companies in India do not: it makes its own raw material. That material is called EcoGran. It comes as small pellets, a blend of PLA and PBAT, which factories can melt and shape into film, bags, cups and trays, much as they would with ordinary plastic pellets.

Because UKHI makes both the pellets and the finished products, you can work with it in two ways. If you run a packaging factory, you can buy EcoGran and make bags on the machines you already have. You will usually not need new equipment. If you are a brand or an exporter, you can skip all of that and buy finished bags. UKHI works with a network of approved factories and arranges trials on your packing line.

EcoGran is industrially compostable, which means it breaks down in a proper composting facility, not in a garden heap or the sea. For those settings, UKHI is developing a second material called EDHA, made through fermentation and designed to break down in soil, fresh water and seawater. EDHA is still in the pilot stage and is not yet on sale.

EcoGran is made using farm waste, mainly pine needles and crop stubble from farmers in Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand, who would otherwise burn it. The Faridabad plant now produces around 140 tonnes a month, and customers include Reliance Retail, Amazon, Aditya Birla Group, Good Earth and V-Mart.

Common Questions About Compostable Packaging in India

How can I check if a compostable packaging supplier in India is genuinely certified?

Look at the bag itself. Under CPCB rules, certified compostable carry bags must carry the word “compostable”, a reference to IS/ISO 17088, the manufacturer’s certificate number and a QR code. You can also search for the company on CPCB’s compostable plastics certification dashboard.

Is biodegradable packaging the same as compostable packaging?

No. “Compostable” means a product is certified to break down within a set time under composting conditions. “Biodegradable” alone promises nothing specific, and Indian authorities have warned that unproven “100% biodegradable” claims can count as misleading advertising.

What happens to compostable packaging after use?

Industrially compostable packaging needs to reach a composting facility, so it must be collected separately from plastic waste. These facilities are still limited in many cities, so ask your supplier where your used packaging can realistically go. Never mix it into plastic recycling.

Which certifications do I need to export compostable packaging?

European buyers usually ask for EN 13432, and US buyers for ASTM D6400, often through BPI. Australia uses AS 4736 and AS 5810. Check with your buyer early, as new certificates take time.

How should I test compostable packaging before switching?

Run a pilot of a few thousand bags alongside your current ones, across different shifts. Compare tearing, sealing, how easily bags open and how fast your team packs.
